Chapter Twelve

It wasn’t long before Emily had wolfed down the rest of her food. They didn’t speak, the silence comfortable as Emily concentrated on eating. She glugged down her soda a little too fast, munching away on the mish-mash of food Mike had put together. It did taste damn good. She could happily eat this every day.

It beat cooking herself and then her food coming out charred.

Emily felt a belch coming. Too many bubbles. She covered her hand with her mouth and managed to stifle it. Across the table, Mike was fighting back a laugh as he reached for his own can. Emily groaned.

“God, sorry about that.”

“Least you were polite about it.” Mike’s eyes twinkled. “Prudence just lets them out and no apology.”

“She is a teenager, so no surprise.” Emily lowered his hand. She could still feel the bubbles in her throat. “My parents raised me better. That doesn’t mean…I mean…”

God, she had to be as red as her hair. Why did she have to put her foot in it?

“No offence taken.” Mike winked. “I like to think Prudence isn’t my kid at times. Just so I can complain about the parenting.”

Emily laughed. She sat back in her chair, rubbing her belly.

“That was really good, Mike. I think I needed that more than I realized.” She sighed. “I feel like I don’t deserve any of this.”

“Hey, we’re squaddies. I may not be enlisted anymore but I can still look out for you.”

“I’m glad.” More than he knew. Emily fought back a yawn. “It’s why Chambers thought you would be a good boss for me. Ex-soldiers are reliable and he knew I would be in good hands.”

In good hands. Why did she have to say that? Why didn’t she just get up and leave before she put her foot in it again and started to sink?

Mike was regarding her with an intense look. Emily resisted the urge to shuffle on her chair. A persistent throbbing was starting between her legs, and wriggling seemed to make it worse.

“Chambers should have said something at the beginning.” Mike said quietly. “I don’t like secrets.”

“And you know why I couldn’t say anything before. Don’t let us go through all this again.”

“Okay, fine.” Mike huffed and raised his hands. “I’ll concede on that. For now. But no more secrets from now on, got it?”

“Got it.”

Emily didn’t have any problem with that. Lying for as long as she had about who she was had been incredibly difficult, and not doing it with just one person was refreshing. Emily hoped she could get things back to how they were from before it all went tits up.

Or as much as she could. Nothing was going to be completely different. Emily had hated Union in the beginning. It was on the other side of the country and was a place where Emily would never be expected to go to. She wouldn’t be here, otherwise. But now, Union had grown on her. It wasn’t as bad as Emily had thought. Union was actually a decent place.
